Pack 216 Pinewood Derby Rules 2016

Picture
  • All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race. After inspection approved cars will not be handled again by the owner. The inspection points are adapted from official BSA race rules. They are:
  1. The car must have been made during the current school year (the race car).
  2. The width of the car shall not exceed 2 inches.
  3. The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
  4. The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
  5. Width between the wheels is – 1 ¾ inch.
  6. Bottom clearance between car and track is 3/8-inch.
  7. To create a level playing field for all entries, axles, wheels, and body wood shall be as provided in official BSA Pinewood Derby Kits. Any kits and/or parts purchased besides the ones supplied must also be BSA approved.
  8. Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
  9. The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs. Only dry lubricant is permitted.
  10. Any custom details added must be within length, width, and weight limits. (Steering wheels, drivers, motors, etc.)
  11. The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
  12. No loose materials of any kind (such as lead shot) are allowed in the car.
  13. The wheel base (distance between front set of wheels and back set of wheels) of the car must not be altered from the original pre-cut slots provided on the block of wood from the official BSA Pinewood Derby Car Kit.
  14. Only the official BSA wheels are acceptable. Cars with old style wheels, hobby lobby wheels, thin-line wheels, or altered wheels are not allowed. Wheels can be sanded to remove surface imperfections, but the treads must be left flat and the width must not be altered.
  15. One car per person may be entered in the races.

  • Each heat will be announced. All contestants must remain behind the barriers.

  • The starter will ensure the cars are on the track properly and will start the race.

  • Several heats will be run and managed by a professional Pinewood Derby race management program on a computer. Electronic finish lines and timers will be used to score each car’s race time and to determine if it will progress into the final races.

  • If a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses and axle, etc, the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant is disqualified. If, on the second run, another car is interfered with, the heat will be run for a third time, but without the disqualified car.
