The Pinewood Derby
The Pinewood Derby is a racing event for unpowered, unmanned miniature cars. Partnered with a parent or guardian, Cub Scouts work together, strengthening bonds and building confidence – and their own custom race cars! They begin with an official Pinewood Derby Race Car kit, then create a design, then carve it from the wood block provided in the kit, and detail it with paint, decals and other accessories, and perfect strategies to compete in their pack’s own Pinewood Derby. It’s s a wonderful learning experience centered on teamwork, ingenuity and sportsmanship – all for the thrill of the race and a lifetime of great memories to share with fellow racers young and old. Pack 216 run all of the scouts cars on each lane of our 4 lane track, and uses a laser timing system to ensure that all cars times are measured accurately in each race.
You can find the specifics of what is allowed on the Pinewood Derby Rules Page.
This day is not necessarily all about speed however as Pack 216 also encourages scouts to make the best looking race cars they can as there is a car show during the races where everyone gets the opportunity to vote for their favorite looking car as well.
Finally pack 216 offers the opportunity for other family members to join in the fun as well with a separate race bracket.
